One (Alone Book 3) Page 3

She swung her legs out over the swing making it swoosh in the air, if only she could be that young and care free again, not that she was that old, she was still young herself but her mind was aging, aging more with each day. Relaxing back on the swing she let her mind wonder, she knew deep down what was going to happen at the facility. She would have to use her powers in a way to defeat the enemy, to stop them releasing the new virus on the world but something was nagging at her, like something was trying to get through. She closed her eyes and opened her mind, letting everything else flow out, her mind needed to be clear.

Images popped up, the snow filled lands of Svalbard, the facility and the incubators holding experiments, a cold and emotionless laugh that made her skin shiver, Stacie was there fighting something, something that was powerful…But then Kaley saw something else, the people who had managed to survive the whole journey with them and her heart clenched…Someone wasn’t there who should have been…And Stacie…Fighting something, NO, someone familiar…

Kaley stopped the swing in motion and opened her eyes, stones and chunks of solid ice had risen off the ground when she had opened her mind but as she cut the connection they plummeted back to earth with a thud. Making her jump.

  “Kaley everything ok?”

Kaley turned to see Lara looking over the fence to the park at her, her face full of concern. She felt the burst of hot tears fall delicately down her cheeks, “I’m ok”.

“You sure chick?” Lara looked around the park at the things Kaley had commanded to rise off the ground.

She nodded, “Just practicing controlling my power more”.

“Ok well don’t overdo it, you look tired”.

“I won’t”, she lied to her friend who seemed happy with her response and moved on to finish whatever chore she was doing.

Kaley nodded as Lara left, a fake smile plastered on her face but deep-down Kaley wasn’t ok, what she had just seen changed so many things but if life and the future could change without her say so then surely she could change it too. She was powerful enough to do mighty things so changing an event would be easy. Right? She stood up from the swing and exited the park and headed to the doctors surgery where the door was just opening and Kian limped out. She lifted her arm and caught him with her invisible hand, she pushed him back inside and followed him, closing the door quietly behind her.

“You did that?” He gasped at her.

She nodded, “I’m powerful Kian remember that”.

His brow furrowed at her words but he nodded, “I can see that now…What can I do for you?” His words were strong but she could see a hint of fear in his eyes.

She lowered her arm and him back down to the floor, “The facility, I want to know more”.

“Sure thing”, he said eyeing up the doctors chair, “Shall we sit and talk, just fire away with the questions”.

“I don’t have time for that”, she replied and launched at him, her hands digging into his skull, his eyes wide with fear as she forced her way into his mind. To see what he could tell her.

Kian ran through the clinical white corridors that had become like a second home to him since the dreaded war took hold, only now he knew the real reason as to what happened and he had a way of maybe getting justice for it but first they needed to find her. The girl. In England.

Footsteps pounded frantically as the doctor’s daughter ran with him to their hopeful escape, Candice. He had learnt her name early on in his career there, how could he not? She was stunning with bright copper and mahogany streaked hair, dazzlingly bright caramel toned eyes and a playful knowing look, he had known she was trouble since he had laid eyes on her but he also knew she wouldn’t take a second look at him, she could have any guy she wanted, why would she want a guy like him, a guy with a disability?

Not that it mattered he had other fish to fry, he had been hired as part of the facilities security team, he had history with being in the military and then a short stint working in a prison after the army due to when he was injured and was no longer considered suitable but his new employers that head hunted him down had overlooked his, ‘Problem’. His injury or disability as his ex-wife had teased him before sleeping with his best mate was minor really, he could still fight and fly helicopters. By minor of course he meant losing a hand to a landmine which he was paid good compensation and managed to have an artificial hand made and put in its place but all he wanted was to work, he hated being at home alone, especially after she left and he took to the bottle, he needed work to give him something to live for again. He didn’t care for his hand, not the way normal people cared when they lost body parts, he was just thankful to be alive and still kicking ass but…the facility…well body parts, they knew too well how to work with body parts.

The start to his week had been fairly ordinary at first, he done his shifts, snuck off to the secret rebel meetings that Dorit held in her private rooms, she was quite high up in the sense of things, she had been a candidate in the so called collapsed ‘European Union’ so ‘they’ never suspected her and then he helped uncover a murder and was now on the run with the murdered doctors daughter.

She had come to him just three days ago explaining to him that she knew he was part of the rebel group but she didn’t care as she needed his help. Her father who was a major doctor in the C.U.R.E programme for the infectious virus that had wiped out most of the world had gone missing and had left a rather strange note in his personal diary. She had known something was amiss, it had been her deceased mother’s birthday and he never missed it no matter how busy he was. Exploring his room she found the letter where only he knew she would find it.

‘My dearest Candice I’m sorry as I have failed. I was working here under false pretences I was so sure I was working on a cure for the infection but no, they kept the truth from me, from most of us doctors. Turns out the cure is not a cure at all but a new form of the infection. There are about ten or more of us doctors all working in the C.U.R.E programme and each of us works on a small part but not knowing what the others are working towards. The head doctor has been able to reproduce a deadlier virus from what we have created and I fear that I know why. I overheard doctor Enok talking to his Dictaphone, explaining that the virus was a month if not weeks away from being completed and that they were building the sufficient bombs to carry the virus to the rest of the world that hasn’t been affected yet or those that have but have sufficient survivors. I fear my hand in this will kill the rest of the people who reside over the land of the world. They won’t just stop at infecting the people they already have they want to eradicate the world, to destroy it and start again. The new virus will kill everything, even the land it touches, then it is predicted after ten or so years for the world and lands to heal they can then begin to rebuild. They have taken on Hitler’s approach on an Aryan race, a race they choose, one they want to breed to perfection and hope to rule the world with, taking out any races or imperfections they don’t want. They plan on rebuilding Europe first renaming it all to ‘Enliven’, in an attempt to re-create a new world, dismissing the old world and names and then rebuilding and claiming other lands as they heal.

This cannot be allowed. I went to find the rebels but fear I have been found out. I plead with you Candice to take them out, to find a way to stop them, to fix and heal the world and to let it prosper like it once did but not under a sadistic control. I fear I cannot do it, I fear by tonight I will be dead’.

And he was right to fear it because the doctor had been brutally murdered and thrown down some stairs with the smell of alcohol on his person and a smashed bottle of whisky. They made it look so realistic, the whole scene and set up was so perfect but Kian knew they had done this before, killed to cover up to stop from being found out by their people because he had helped in their cover ups.

Upon finding him dead Candice had vowed revenge and with a heavy heart and remorseful soul due to his past dealings with instances like this he agreed to help her. Maybe because he actually did feel rem
orseful or maybe because she was too pretty to say no to. Thinking partially with his pants not entirely his heart. The only problem was they could not plot it here, being the late doctors daughter was too dangerous now, so they hid and waited in one of the rebels haunts until the dead of night to make the dangerous trip to the helipad which Kian knew one of his rebel associates set up ready for them, accidently leaving the door ajar from his trip back from a supply run so the computer system wouldn’t clock on to new movement in the area, which would mean the alarm shouldn’t sound until the helicopter started, giving them those few precious moments to try and flee.

The weird thing was it wasn’t just them that wanted and needed them to leave, oh no, the girl and her strange message. It was Candice that spotted the strange image floating in space in front of her in one of the old communication rooms that had been abandoned due to the power being diverted to the labs, with no one left on the outside world to talk to or worth talking to there was no need for communications. The girl was just as shocked to see them as they were to see her, she stood there looking around and then asked, “Can you see me?”

Kian had pulled Candice away not knowing what this was, he had seen holograms of people before, back in the army where there were specialist units that had been prepared to deal with cyber threats, he had been in training for one before being deployed and losing his hand but none of that training mattered because it wasn’t the cyber threat that was the problem, it was these assholes.

“I need your help”, the girl stated looking directly at him, she didn’t really take in Candice for some reason, just him.

  “What kind of help?”

“I need to get to where you are now, I need to get to the place with the never-ending snow, I need to stop the infection, I need to find the cure”.

His heart froze in his mouth, “H…H…How do you know about the cure?”

“I don’t really, all I know is that I need to get there to help, to fix something, I get bits and pieces that’s all”.

“Bits and pieces?” he asked but Candice cut him off.

  “Where are you?” Candice asked.

“Tonbridge in England”, the girl replied.

“How are you doing this? How are you…Communicating with us?” Kian asked.

The girl shrugged, “I don’t think you would believe me even if I told you, let’s just leave it that I need your help”.

Candice turned to Kian, “Will the helicopter make it that far?”

He shrugged, “Maybe, it should do, depends on how much fuel Fernandez put in it”.

“You have to try”, the girl stated.

Looking deep into those eyes that were not really there, they still pulled him in, made something click in his mind and Kian knew he had to go, he had to help, or he would die trying.

Rushing down the corridors at full speed they both crashed through a door which came out at a staircase, following it up they instantly felt the chill of the coming air around them, the artificial heat of the ‘Town’ below was lagging behind them. Reaching the top and pulling at the strange door that acted like an emergency exit they strolled out into a small cupboard like space which housed old dusty bleach bottles and cobwebs. Making it through the main building they came out to the snow covered world which was still cloaked in the forever darkness. Night time here could last for months on end making the terrain hazardous but the facility did have some security lighting placed at certain points so they could just make out the way to go, they just had to keep away from the lookout posts.

Kian’s uniform was built for the snow, his thick set fur lined boots took to the snow with ease along with his thick fur lined coat but Candice although a doctors daughter she was also nothing special to the higher ups, she had no access to the outside world until the sun rose in the strange summer that rocked this side of the world, her wardrobe was mainly a summer one. He had managed to steal her a large coat but the shoes he couldn’t get hold of, so her own pair of running trainers had to do.

Lucky for them the wind was minimal, so he knew taking off with the chopper was going to be fairly easy, all that worried him was whether anyone found out and came after them.

The helipad came into view, the gate unlocked like planned. Shoving the girl inside he roared up to the flying machine jumping in and starting her up. Sighing with relief her knew this was going to be fine, a walk in the park, they were free.

BANG! A shot rang out and hit the windscreen, one of the lookouts had spotted them and was shooting this way, lucky for them it had been one with an assault rifle and not a sniper rifle but still they both could do a hell of a lot of damage to the bird if they wanted. He also knew sooner or later the sniper would appear and then they might not be so lucky.

“Get down”, he commanded to Candice and she done as she was told, ducking down as he piloted the machine to start the ascent. The swoosh of the blades whipping through the ice cold air was comforting, even if the ding of bullets on metal wasn’t but they were up and moving away from the facility, they were really going to make it.

BANG, SNICK, “ARGH!!!” Candice let out a groan, lifting her hand up from her side, a sniper had aimed at the bottom of the bird and found a weak spot hitting the helicopter it then ripped through and into Candice’s side.

“Candice, Candice just wait, when we’re away I’ll land, we’ll get help”.

“No, no, just get to England…We need to get to England!”

The trip was quiet as he flew over the vast oceans heading towards the English coastline, Candice was in a bad way and although he had given her a first aid kit with some bandages he was no surgeon. He had the basic training but this wound was deep, the bullet had broken into pieces inside her and she was losing too much blood.

The sight of the green coastline greeted them just as the sun rose up over the deep blue casting a shimmering echo of the helicopter beneath them. He had no idea where Tonbridge was located, he knew how to get to different countries but to their designated towns, well there were no Satnavs around anymore to guide him.

“Kian, I feel really cold”, Candice said to him.

He looked back in the cockpit and found an old blanket slung over a seat, reaching back he grabbed it and placed it over her cold and shivering body.

“It’s fine, we will be there sss…” He felt his mind wonder as something pushed inside, an entity of sorts, a different mind to his own and it told him where to go. He zoned out from Candice and the panoramic views of the countryside.

“Kian we will be there when?” Candice asked but there was no reply, Kian was no longer home. It wasn’t until the mansion came into view and the entity left him that he came back but Candice was already asleep. Drifting into a world of peacefulness, she was going to be with her father again and she could watch it all unfold from the clouds.

For Kian panic broke out all over his body as a fire started in the engine and the helicopter began to fall right out of the sky.

“What the hell did you just do to me?” Kian yelled pushing Kaley away as she let the connection break.

  “I needed to know”.

“I could have told you what you needed to know”, he sobbed, the memory of Candice still so raw.

“I needed to see”, she replied her mind racing with his memories.

“You knew that memory though, you called to me, to both of us you told me I had to come here”, he hissed through the pain, “You came to me…Why did you need to see it again?”

Kaley backed away from him a confusion filtered over her young face, “I…needed to know more. I know I called you but I wanted to know why. Why I will be losing so much to go where you came from”.

“You make no sense”, he cried.

“It will all make sense sooner or later”, she said turning on her heels.

“You…that feeling of you in my mind…You…done it before…”

“Yes to guide you here”, she stated opening the door a few inches to the outside world.

  “No
not just then”, he gasped, “I’ve been in a coma like state for weeks the doctor said but they didn’t know why…It was you wasn’t it? Why?”

  “Because I needed more time”.

  “More time, for what?”

“To grow my powers and to see…To see who I must lose in the process of completing my journey”.

“Do they know? That you knocked me out?”

She turned back to him and looked him dead in the eye, her power filtering out again, “No and they won’t ever know”, and she wiped all that just happened from his mind and left him wondering why he was staring into space looking around the empty doctor’s surgery.

  Chapter three …

Sian sat there on the top bunk, her face red from all the blood that was flooding from her nose which she was desperately trying to hide with her small hands. She sobbed almost silently trying to not let Ollie see the pain and the fear she was feeling.

The only thing was, Ollie did know because he had witnessed it happen from behind the bedroom door. Their mother had come home from a drug fuelled night out with her so-called friends, those friends were mainly women like her, too high on Cocaine to remember anything important like feeding their children, going to work or using the ration book for rations and not to buy drugs with. Sian had been waiting for her in the front room, for her age she was supremely authoritive and strong willed and she wanted their mum to know what a piece of crap she was. So when the front door opened and their mum fell in Sian went into action.

  “Nice night out Helena?”

Their mother had looked up at her, “Yes, what’s it to you?” Her tone was that of someone on the come down.
